What is Dalton's atomic theory?

The main postulates of Dalton’s atomic theory are:

  1. Atoms are indivisible particles.
  2. Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed.
  3. The atoms of an element are alike in all respect and differ from atoms of other elements.
  4. Atoms of different elements may combine with each other in a fixed, simple, whole number ratio to form compound atoms.
  5. Atoms are the smallest unit of matter that can take part in a chemical reaction.
