Respiration is catabolic whereas photosynthesis is anabolic.
In respiration, molecules are broken down to release energy, such as the breakdown of glucose into carbon dioxide and water.
In photosynthesis, molecules are synthesised. So plants synthesize carbohydrates from simple molecules such as carbon dioxide and water in presence of light and chlorophyll. Hence it is an anabolic process.
