An ion is an atom or molecule which has lost or gained one or more valence electrons, giving it a positive or negative electrical charge.Ions can also comprise more than one atom and are then called polyatomic ions. For example, the ammonium ion (NH4+) carries a positive charge and is composed of one nitrogen atom and four hydrogen atoms
An positive ion (cation) is formed by removing electron(s) from an atom or group of atoms.
A negative ion (anion) is formed by gaining electron(s) an atom or group of atoms.
