Empirical mass is the ratios of numbers of atoms of each element in a compound to the total number of atoms in a compound.
It can be calculated from the percentage composition by the following steps:
1)Divide the percentage composition by the relative atomic mass. This is the ratio of the number of atoms.
2)The simplest ratio is calculated and is then multiplied by an integar to give simplest whole number ratio of the atoms.
The empirical mass is then calculated by finding the mass of each atom within the compound and multiplying this by their subscript. When we do this for each atom and adding them together at the end.
