What is a multi phase generator?

Multi phase generator can be of two types:
a) Two phase AC generator
In two-phase AC generator there are two armature coils with their own slip rings and brushes are held at 90° to each other. When these coils rotate in magnetic field an e.m.f. is produced. When the e.m.f. in one coils is maximum it is minimum in the other coil. Hence the e.m.f differ by a phase of 90°.

b) Three phase AC generator
In three phase generator there are three armature coils with their own slip rings and brushes inclined to one another at 60°. When these coils rotate in a magnetic field an e.m.f. is produced which differ from one another by 60°.
