During pregnancy, the chorionic villi and uterine tissue become interdigitated with each other and jointly form a structural and functional unit between the foetus and maternal body called placenta.
Placenta facilitates the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the embryo. It also helps in the removal of carbon dioxide and excretory materials produced by the embryo. It also produces several hormones likehCG, human placental lactogen, estrogens, progestogens etc.
