Congenital heart disease can describe a number of different problems affecting the heart, most of which either obstruct blood flow in the heart or vessels near it, or cause blood to flow through the heart in an abnormal manner. It is the most common type of birth defect. Congenital heart disease is responsible for more deaths in the first year of life than any other birth defects. Many of these defects need to be followed carefully. Some heal over time, others will require treatment.
