Reduction with Carbon:
Carbon can be used to reduce the number of oxides and other compounds, and because of the low cost and availability of coke, this method is widely used.
When carbon is used as a reducing agent, it combines with the oxygen of metal oxide to form carbon monoxide.
 
 
When haematite is heated with Carbon, carbon oxidizes to carbon monoxide and haematite is reduced to iron oxide. Reaction proceeds as:
 
Fe2O3 + 3C → 2FeO (spongy iron) + 3CO↑
