Food is crushed and broken into fine particles by the strong muscular contractions of the stomach. Food is also thoroughly mixed with digestive juices.
Gastric glands present in the walls of the stomach release HCl, pepsin and mucus. HCl creates an acidic medium which helps the action of pepsin. Pepsin helps in digestion of proteins.
