what exactly is gravitational potential energy? is it the potential energy of the force of gravity or the potential energy against the force of gravity?

The potential energy is the energy stored in the body at a given position.
As the force of gravity is a conservative force, the potential energy of a body arising out of this force is systematically called as the gravitational potential energy.
