What do you mean by that respiration is a catabolic process?

Catabolism is the metabolic breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, often resulting in a release of energy. In respiration, carbohydrates are broken down by oxidation into simpler molecules of CO2 and water, with the release of energy, which is usually stored in ATP. Hence it is a catabolic process.
