Expert Answer:
Mutations are changes in a genomic sequence. Here a change occurs in the genes of a cell which cause it to have a different function. Mutations range in size from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a large segment of a chromosome.
Gene mutations occur in two ways: they can be inherited from a parent or acquired during a persons lifetime.
Mutations are caused by radiation, viruses, transposons and mutagenic chemicals, as well as errors that occur during meiosis or DNA replication.
