The electromagnetic radiations of wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm are called ultraviolet radiations.

Effects on the human body:

i. Skin cancer

ii. Blindness and increased chances of cataract in eyes

iii. Malfunctioning of the immune system

Properties of UV radiations:
1. They can pass through quartz and are absorbed by glass. Hence, to obtain a UV spectrum from its source quartz prism is used.
2. These radiations travel in a straight line.
3. They are usually scattered by dust particles present in the atmosphere.
4. They obey laws of reflection of light.
5. They strongly affect the photographic plate.
6. They produce fluorescence when incident on zinc-sulphide.

Uses of UV radiations:
1. Detecting the purity of gems and ghee
2. Sterilising purposes
3. Producing vitamin D in the food of plants and animals.
