The two quests in physics are: Unification and Reduction.
There are attemps to unify all the four fundamental forces of nature to explain the grand working of the universe.
This is the quest for unification.
There are also attempts to derive the properties of larger, complex system from the properties and interactions of smaller and simpler parts/theories.
This is the quest for reduction.
Physics is regarded as a basic science because all that we can observe in nature can be explained and understood with the help of various physical laws.
