The chromosomes X and Y are referred to as sex chromosomes. They are called so because they are involved in the determination of sex of an individual. The combination of X and Y chromosomes determines a person’s sex. Human females have two X chromosomes (XX) while males possess one X and one Y chromosome (XY). This XY sex-determination system is found in most mammals as well as some reptiles and plants.
