Expert Answer
When two waves of the same type (longitudinal or transverse), having same amplitude and frequency, travel with the same speed, along the same straight line, in opposite directions, they suppose upon each other to give rise to a new type of waves called the stationary or standing waves. They are so called because there is no transference of energy in the medium along the waves.
