what are impulses?

Physially - it is the change of rate of momentum. Formula ------ Impulse = Force x Time
1) If you wish to know about nerve impulse. It is - It is transmission of electric stimulus across the nerve fiber.
2)It is governed by the movement of Na+ and K+ ions in & out of nerve fiber. There is a change in their concentration across the length of nerve fiber in the form of a wave which carry the impulse acorr it.
