Expert Answer:
A whole number that can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself.
Examples: 4 can be divided evenly by 2 (as well as 1 and 4), so it is a composite number.
9 can be divided evenly by 3 (as well as 1 and 9), so it is a composite number.
Consider the number 5.
It cannot be divided evenly by any number other than 1 and 5, so it is not a composite number.
