A cataract is clouding or opacity of the lens that results in decreased vision. It is a defect of vision caused by the formation of a membrane over the lens causing the lens to become cloudy and milky. . Some of the causes for the formation of cataract are aging, ultraviolet damage to the eye lens, heredity, alcohol, smoking, trauma and prolonged use of certain medicines. Cataract can be corrected by the surgical removal of the membrane.
