Water current in a river from East to west has speed of 4m/s. A boat starts moving at 10m/s from South bank to reach north bank. If boat started at 30°with current, the drift of boat in crossing 40m wide river is nearly ?

Expert Answer:

As shown in the figure, let the boat travel at an angle 30° with flow direction with speed v = 10 m/s.

Time to cross river of 40 m width = 40/(10×sin30) = 40/5 = 8 s.

drift in west-east direction  from starting point = (v cos30 - 4)×8 = [ 10 (√3/2) - 4 ]×8 = 37.28 m
