AC can be trasmitted over longer distances without significant losses, than DC. Household and most of other power requirements are met by AC. What we have available is AC, and hence it's logical that most of the devices should work on AC, because that's what is available to us. There is no reason why we can't use DC with heating devises, we can, but what's the point, why to struggle to get DC, when AC is available at our disposal, works just fine.
