According to the right hand thumb rule, if the direction of current is towards curling of the fingers of your right hand, then the direction of the magnetic field will be given by the direction of the thumb. In the horizontal case, just lay your fingers across the direction of flow of current, and put your thumb perpendicular to the fingers then the direction of the thumb will give the direction of the magnetic field.
