(0.50 m³) x (100 cm / 1m)³ x (1 mL / 1 cm³) x (1 L / 1000 mL) = 125 L 

Therefore,  a 0.5 m  x 0.5 m x 0.5 m hollow cube can indeed hold 8.5 L 

Additional volume it could hold.. 125 L - 8.5 L = 116.5 L
