Two circles of radii 2cm and 3cm touch each other externally. What is the length of the direct common tangent?

Expert Answer:

d = distance between their centres = 2 + 3 = 5 cm
The length of direct common tangent = √(d2 - (r22 - r12)) = √(52 - (32 - 2 2)) = √20 = 2√5 cm
