the hypotenuse being the length of a side is positive. also note that for finding sine or cos ratios when we take the length of a side to be negative, it's not negative but it indicates the quadrant that the angle lies in.
e.g. in second quadrant, he cos ratio is nergative, so along the x-axis we need to be on the left side of zero, where the coordinates of any point are of the type(-x, 0) where x is a positive number.
