Expert Answer
The technology to produce "artificial oil" already exists. The problem is that even with fuel prices as high as they are, it is not yet economically worthwhile to invest in it, especially given the vast reserves of conventional oil and the relative inefficiency of the current techniques. (Remember that most of what you pay for petrol is tax, not raw material cost.)
