The compound microscope has focal length of objective and eyepiece are 3cm and 5cm. Small object is placed at 4cm from the objective. Find the M.P if final image is at D.D.V?

Let us apply the lens formula to get the image distance of objective lens.

we have, (1/v) - (1/u) = (1/f)   ....................(1)

where v is lens-to-image distance, u is lens-to-object distance and f is focal length

(1/v) = (1/f) + (1/u) = (1/3) - (1/4) = 1/12   or  v = 12

( by sign convention, u is -ve )

magnification mo of objective lens = v/u = 12/(-4) = -3

If image is formed for the eye-piece at D.D.V ,  magnification me of eye piece = ( 1 + (D/fe) )

Where D = 25 which is D.D.V and fe is focal length of eye piece.

magnification me = ( 1 + (25/5) ) = 6

Overall magnification m = mome = (-3)(6) = -18
