It occurs because of inter-molecular attractive forces between the liquid and solid surrounding surfaces, and as the liquid is attracted more towards the walls it rises into capillary. We quantise and study these effects by incorporating surface tension, and T cos Θ is the force, that upholds the weight of risen liquid.
