Because the time period, i.e. time interval between successive compressions or rarefactions doesn't depend upon the separation distance, but on the relative motion of observer and source of sound, called Doppler effect.
Since there is no relative motion, the time period or frequency will not change, hence the time interval is just equal to the time period which frequency inversed.
