When the solid is in the form of a long bar then the velocity of the sound varies as (E/ρ)1/2 . where 
E : Elastic Coeffcient of the medium
ρ: density of the material

Hence the (velocity through aluminium rod )/ velocity in the air =

((Eal al)1/2 )/ (Ea/ ρa)1/2 = (Ealρa/Eaρal)1/2

where Eal and ρal are for aluminium rod
and E, ρa are for air .

Time = distance/ speed

Hence time through aluminium/ time through air = (Ealρa/Eaρal) -1/2
