Dear Student,
Here is the solution:
Downstream the rate is 20 MPH
Return is 20/2.5 OR 8 MPH
Thus the current is 1/2 the difference in the 2 rates (20-8)/2 OR 12/2=6 MPH 

Then the speed of the boat is 20-6=14 MPH.
