Expert Answer:

Let the sides of the 2 squares be x and y.

Then x2 + y2 = 640.....(i)

4x - 4 y = 64

ie. x - y= 64/4 = 16

Now x - y+16....(ii)

Put from (ii) into (i)

(y+16)2  + y 2  =640

i.e y2   + 256  + 32 y + y2 = 640

i.e 2y2 + 32 y  - 384 = 0

i.e y2 + 16 y - 192 =0

Now solve this quadratic to get y . Then put in (ii) to  get x
