The magnetic needle has two forces acting on it, one due to the earth's magnetic field and the other due to the applied field. As a result it rotates through an angle of 40 degrees.
Use tan theta = horizontal component of earth's field/ applied magnetic field
Put theta = (90-40 )degrees = 50 0and horizontal component of earth's filed as 0.36T and calculate.
