Final velocity is determined using conservation of angular momentum.
 
Initial angular momentum of mass moving in circular motion = m vo R  .............................(1)
 
where m is mass , vo is initial speed and R is initial radius of circular motion
 
Final angular momentum = m v (R/2) ............................(2)
 
where v is fianl speed .
 
By conservation of angular momentum , we equate (1) and (2) to get final speed v
 
m vo R = m v (R/2)   or  v = 2vo 
 
Final kinetic energy = (1/2) m v2 = ( 1/2 ) m ( 2 vo )2  = 2 m vo2
