Expert Answer:
The state os Awadh was an important state consisting of rich fertile plains. The British had devised many methods to conquer the parts of India. Apart from fighting war, they annexed many Indian states by implementing various policies such as the 'Doctrine of Lapse' and the 'Subsidiary Alliance System'. Awadh was the first Indian state to accept the terms of the Subsidiary Alliance System in 1764. The Nawab of Awadh was forced to give over half of his territory to the Company in 1801, as he failed to pay for the “subsidiary forces”. Later, in 1858, the state of Awadh was annexed by the British on the charges of mismanagement of the state.
