Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid to shearing when the fluid is in motion.
Cytoplasm is a complex viscoelastic material having a continuous liquid phase (the cytosol) plus various suspended particles, granules, and membranous structures. More precisely, the cytomatrix is a mixed-phase body composed of a fibrillar network penetrated by a solution. The viscosity of the cytoplasm calculated from the translational diffusion coefficient or the rotational correlation time was 2.0-3.0 centipoise (1 P = 0.1 Pa X sec).
