The food that we take inside our body is in a complex form. For it to be utilised in our body, it should be broken down into simple forms. This function is carried out by digestion. In digestion the complex food materials like carbohydrates, proteins and fats are converted into glucose, amino acids and fatty acids and glycerol by using various enzymes. Food is digested in a stepwise manner and involves several intermediate steps and several enzymes.
These simple constituents of food is then used for building up the body parts and for releasing energy during respiration.
