Breaking down of food is not respiration. That is carried out by nutrition.

In respiration, energy from the digested food is released. For releasing this energy, we need to respire. Respiration has to be continuous since the cells of the body need energy continuously. Also the carbon dioxide produced has to be continuously removed from the body since it is toxic if it accumulates in the body. There is always digested food supplied to the cells so that energy can be released using oxygen.
