The following are some of the initiatives to improve irrigation systems:
- Interconnecting supply systems provide greater --Both groundwater and alternative sources, such as recycled water, could assist in meeting local needs.
Irrigation modernisation is the process to rationalise and improve the efficiency of outdated irrigation systems. The irrigation system needs to be modernised so that water can be efficiently delivered to where it is required in the future at the service levels required by farmers so that they can continue to compete on world markets. Modernising the distribution systemcan also generate substantial water savings.
Water conservation and efficiency measures are one of the most cost-effective and sustainable options for addressing scarcity. Modernising the distribution system creates much more opportunity for improved on-farm efficiency. This provides additional water savings that canbe used to improve farm productivity or sold for a profit on the water market. Various management options also exist to maximise the ecological benefits of environmental water, including targeted watering sites, en route watering and complementary works.
- Increase of the efficiency of the irrigation distribution systems. - Optimisation of the existing irrigation schemes (interconnection) - On farm efficient irrigation systems - Wastewater reuse and recycling in agreement with civil water companies. - Multi-objectives low impact basins (flood prevention and irrigation, e.g. flood storage basins, mining basins, etc.)
