NO3- is tested using brown ring test.
To perform this test in the laboratory, an aqueous solution of salt is taken. Dilute ferrous sulphate is aded to it. Then from the sides of the tube conc. sulphuric acid is added. A brown ring is formed at the junction of two layers.
NO3-+3Fe2++ 4H+NO +3Fe3+ + 2H2O
[Fe(H2O)6]2+ +NO [Fe(H2O)5(NO)]2+ + H2O
