Autotrophs are the only organisms capable of preparing their own food from simple inorganic materials like carbon dioxide and water, using light energy. All the heterotrophs (which are all organisms other than autotrophs) obtain their energy directly or indirectly from this food. Thus it can be seen that the food prepared by plants during photosynthesis is used by themselves and also by all the heterotrophs, either directly or indirectly for all their energy purposes.
