Viruses are intermediates between living and non-living things because they exhibit similarities with non-living and living things.
Similarities with Non-living Things
• Lack cellular structure
• Ability to crystallise
• Inert outside the living cell
• Absence of respiration and growth
Similarities with Living Things
• Show the presence of genetic material
• Viruses can mutate
• Show the ability to multiply when inside a host cell
• Take over the machinery of the host cell to multiply themselves
• Causes diseases in humans
• Secrete certain enzymes such as neuraminidase and transcriptase
