Expert Answer:

C2H6 + 7/2O2 -----> 2CO2 + 3H2O Combustion of ethane gives 2 molecules of CO2 and 3 molecules of H2O. So, Z is ethane. Z is formed on reduction of Y in the presence of nickel. C2H4  + H2 -----> C2H6   ethanol with a large quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid on heating produces ethene. CH3-CH2-OH -------> CH2=CH2 + H2O   Therefore, X is ethanol, Y is ethene and Z is ethane.
