Expert Answer

The resistance of one piece is 1/6 x 18 = 3 ohms, others are 6 ohms and 9 ohms.

They form a triangle with 12V connected across 9 ohms.

Now the resistance of 3 and 6 ohms are in series and this is in parallel with the 9 ohm resistor.

So total resistance is 9/2 ohms.

Current = V/i = 12/(9/2) = 8/3 A

So a current of 8/3 A will flow through each resistance.

Two wires of copper have the same length but cross-sectional area in the ratio of 3:1. The resistance of the thicker wire is 12 ohm. (a) Calculate the resistance of the thinner wire.
