x and y are roots of ax2+bx+c = 0

Then x+y = -b/a   and xy = c/a

Now, (x-y)2 = x2 + y2 - 2xy

                    = (x+y)2 - 2xy - 2xy = (x+y)2 - 4xy = (-b/a)2 - 4(c/a) = b2 / a2 -  4c/a

Hence, x-y = (b2 / a2 -  4c/a)
