Expert Answer:
those elements whose properties lie between that of metals and non metals, the classification of any particular element as a metalloid has been described as 'arbitrary'.
There is no fixed pattern for the properties this can be seen by taking few examples from the properties of metaloids.
properties
- solid, with a metallic lustre
- densities lower than neighbouring poor metals but higher than those of neighbouring nonmetals.
- intermediate ionization energies (usually falling between those of metals and nonmetals)
