In catabolism or catabolic process, there is a metabolic breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, often resulting in a release of energy. It is a destructive process. Less energy is stored in the products than in the reactants.
For example - Cellular respiration is a catabolic process since glucose is broken down into carbon dioxide and water, releasing energy in the process
Both anabolism and catabolism are important are important for maintaining homeostasis.
