let the distance of the first ship from the foot of the light house be x and of the othe be y.so if A is the top and B is the bottom of the light house and C and D are the positions of the two ships respectively, then

tan(alpha)=h/x

tan(beta)=h/y

so

x=h cot(alpha)

y=h cot(beta)

x+y=h[cot apha+cot beta]

now convert cot to tan using cot alpha=1/tan alpha, do the same for cot beta also and you will get the answer.
