According to the Newton's second law,

F  rate of change of momentum.

F  Δp/Δt

F  Δ(mv)/Δt

F  mΔv/Δt                  ............since mass is constant,

Δv/Δt = rate of change of velocity = acceleration = a

F  ma

F = kma.

k is the propotionality constant.
