Expert Answer:

Hi dear,

The alpha particles get deflected by the external magnetic feild because of the repulsive force of the nucleus. Their basic properties:

1. They are highly ionising

2. Very less penetration power, can be stopped even by a paper

3. Deflected slightly in magnetic feild.

4. Alphas have more mass than other radiations -beta and gamma.

Lorentz forcce also plays an important role stating that any particle with charge q moving with velocity v in magnetic feild will experience a force and hence changes its direction.

Hope this helped.
